Ma Chao-yuan (馬超遠), deputy director of the Department of West Asian Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), held a meeting with ministry staff in Israel on Saturday to gain a better understanding of the situation in the country and how Taiwanese expatriates there have been faring.
Ma, sent by Foreign Affairs Minister James Huang (黃志芳), arrived in Tel Aviv on Friday to provide assistance to Taiwanese expatriates and diplomatic mission staff amid renewed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Ma urged Taiwanese diplomats and their dependents living in Israel to be pay close attention to their personal safety as the country has been engaged in operations in Lebanon for more than two weeks. He also asked them to maintain close contact with Taiwanese expatriates in Israel, currently numbering about 20, and to extend to them any assistance that they may require.
After the meeting in Tel Aviv, Ma headed to Jerusalem in the company of several ministry colleagues to pay a visit to Taiwanese citizen Lin Min-hsin (林民欣), who along with her family moved to the city from Taiwan five months ago.
Later in the afternoon, Ma returned to Tel Aviv, where he presented 1,000 New Israeli sheqels (US$227) to Taiwanese citizen Yeh Man (葉蔓) as a token of the government's concern for Taiwanese expatriates.
Yeh and her family fled from the war-torn city of Haifa to Tel Aviv several days ago.
