CLA to increase bounty on illegal foreign workers

    CNA, TAIPEI
    Sunday, Jul 30, 2006, Page 3

The Council of Labor Affairs is planning to increase cash rewards to informants who help track down illegal foreign workers and the employers who hire them, a council spokesman said yesterday.

The spokesman said the highest cash reward could reach NT$50,000, depending on the nature and seriousness of each case. This will be the council's second adjustment to its reward program for tracing runaway foreign laborers since April, he said.

He said NT$5,000 is offered for information leading to the finding of a runaway worker, and NT$2,000 for reported irregularities by both employers and foreign workers.

The spokesman said a greater number of runaway workers have been found by law enforcement since the rewards were increased in April, while the rate of foreign laborers running away from their factories has declined since then.

"This is the reason why the CLA is considering increasing the reward amounts again -- to help the government catch illegal foreign workers and crack down on unlawful hiring by local employers," the spokesman said.

Council statistics show that there are some 330,000 migrant workers at present. The council gives out around NT$12 million (US$366,000) a year in rewards to people providing information on tracking down illegal workers.
