DPP spokesman criticizes Ma over 'double standards'

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday lashed out at Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) for practicing double standards and "lying to the people."

DPP Spokesman Tsai Huang-liang (蔡煌瑯) said that Ma, while turning a blind eye to party members' misconduct, had allowed KMT lawmakers to criticize the DPP.

Tsai was referring to reports that KMT Spokeswoman Cheng Li-wen (鄭麗文), as revealed by the Chinese-language Next magazine, had been living for free in an apartment provided by business tycoon Chou Hsin-yi (周信義) in the past two years. Chou is said to maintain good relations with several politicians.

In addition to Cheng, a group of KMT legislators, including Ko Chun-hsiung (柯俊雄), Wu Ing-yi (吳英毅) and Chang Sho-wen (張碩文), had reportedly visited a lounge bar, where they were entertained by five bar girls, during a recent trip to China. The group was supposed to be on an inspection tour relating to the small three links.

The DPP charged that the KMT did not punish the lawmakers and Cheng, but only issued a warning that they would be disciplined if they committed the same mistake again.

"We are surprised at Ma's handling of the KMT members' misconduct," Tsai said. "Ma has said that the KMT will never allow corruption among its ranks, but now he has turned a blind eye to these people's misbehavior and allowed them to escape public criticism easily."

"We suspect that Ma is deceiving the public by saying one thing but doing another to maintain his popularity," Tsai added. "Ma actually practices double standards in dealing with corruption if we compare how they attack the DPP when it is in the same situation."
