The trial of the president's son-in-law, Chao Chien-ming (趙建銘), and six other defendants on suspicion of insider trading involving Taiwan Development Corp stock began yesterday at the Taipei District Court. All but one of the defendants -- Waterland Securities Co board director Tsai Chin-wen (蔡清文) -- pleaded not guilty. Tsai, who has turned state witness, defended his role in the case by saying he did not know then that it was insider information. Meanwhile, Chao and his father, Chao Yu-chu (趙玉柱), both denied being involved in insider trading. The next court date has been set for Aug. 9. Prosecutors have requested an eight-year jail term for Chao Chien-ming and 10 years for his father. Meanwhile, the Taiwan High Court yesterday asked the Taipei District Court to review its decision to grant bail to Chao Chien-ming and two of his co-defendants. The district court is expected to decide within the next couple of days whether or not it will order the three to be detained again.
