RISKY RUBBERS: People were advised to buy only clearly labeled condoms from convenience stores, as those from 30 sex stores all failed to pass inspections

As Lovers' Day approaches, the Consumers' Foundation yesterday warned that none of 30 kinds of condoms in different shapes and tastes purchased from local sex shops passed safety checks conducted by the Department of Health.

The Consumers' Foundation urged the government yesterday to step up its inspection of condoms, while releasing a survey showing that none of the condom products sold at erotic products stores in Taipei passed inspections by health authorities.

Yu Kai-hsiung (游開雄), deputy secretary-general of the foundation, noted that since Dec. 20 last year, all condoms sold on the market must be registered with the Department of Health as a medical product and receive a code after passing inspection.

For the purpose of the survey, the foundation purchased 30 condom products costing between NT$15 and NT$220 from seven erotic products stores and one night market vendor in Taipei City and Taipei County from Tuesday to Thursday last week, Yu said.

He noted that none of the products had a code issued by the department, while seven did not indicate on their labels the name of the manufacturer, the expiration and manufacture dates or the shipment identification number. One of the products was not labeled and had no information at all on it.

According to Yu, when shopping for condoms, consumers should check to see if the products are labeled with codes issued by the department and the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection to ensure the safety of the products they use.

Yu noted that unlike the condoms sold in the erotic products stores, almost all condom products sold at hypermarkets and convenient stores are clearly labeled.
