A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan yesterday afternoon, rocking buildings in Taipei for almost a minute, but no damage or casualties were immediately reported, the Central Weather Bureau said.
The quake was felt throughout the nation. In Taipei, tall buildings swayed, and some office workers and residents ran into the street.
The quake's epicenter was located 82km east of the Ilan County port of Nanao (南澳), the bureau said.
The harbor town lies 80km southeast of Taipei.
The bureau warned of aftershocks, but said they were not expected to cause any damage because of the epicenter's distance off shore.
Taiwan Semiconductor Man-ufacturing Co and United Microelectronics Corp, the world's top two contract chip manufacturers, and the nation's top oil refiner, Chinese Petroleum Corp, said operations were unaffected so far.
Yesterday's quake was the second biggest in Taiwan this year, the bureau said.
