The opening of a pet market in Taipei City that had been scheduled for today has been postponed indefinitely due to opposition from local residents. The Xinsheng Pet Market -- billed as the first of its kind in Taiwan -- is located under the Xinsheng overpass as part of the Xinsheng Holiday Farm Market and will include about 60 stands run by pet sellers, pet accessory vendors and animal protection organizations. While the Taipei City Government and the Xinsheng Holiday Farm Market expected to contribute to making the city into a pet-friendly environment with the establishment of the market, residents argued that the market would constitute an infectious disease threat. Lin Fang-wei (林芳薇), Xinya Borough chief, said that residents supported the market's sale of agricultural products, but would vehemently oppose the pet market because of sanitary concerns. The Taipei City Government's Department of Economic Development said that the city promised to postpone the opening of the market until residents of the borough endorsed it.
