Taiwan Quick Take: UN bid to focus on two goals

Taiwan will launch its 14th bid to join the UN at the upcoming UN Assembly meeting, scheduled to open on Sept. 12, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday. John Chen (陳忠), director of the ministry's Department of International Organizations, said this year's bid would focus on two goals: to strive for the rights of the Taiwanese people to be represented in the UN and to urge the UN to play a more active role in maintaining peace in the Asia-Pacific region. Chen said the two-fold approach began last year, combining the nation's quest to participate in the UN and a call for the UN to be active in maintaining cross-strait peace. This year, the second goal has been expanded to ask the UN to assume an active role in maintaining peace in the entire Asia-Pacific region, instead of just cross-strait stability, he said.
