Taiwan Quick Take: Seven killed in car crash

Seven young adults died in a car accident early yesterday morning in Tsaotun Township (草屯), Nantou County. Local police said speeding was likely the main cause of the accident. They said the seven occupants of the car -- a rebuilt hot rod which could only seat five -- were all thrown out of the car and apparently killed on the spot. According to the police, the speeding car failed to negotiate a turn and hit a traffic island, sending the mangled car flying across the road, across a piece of farmland and into an access road near a filling station. Police were checking videotapes from a closed-circuit TV camera overlooking the street to see if another car was racing with the vehicle before the accident occurred.
