Taiwan Quick Take: Taipei to boost film industry

Excited by the growing popularity of the Taipei Film Festival, the Taipei City Cultural Affairs Department said yesterday it would establish a committee to encourage the development of the local film industry. "We will come up with measures to grow the industry, such as allowing filmmakers to shoot their films in public spaces owned by the city government free of charge," Commissioner Liao Hsien-hao (廖咸浩) said. Liao said the success of the film festival, which features independent films, showed the public's appreciation for non-mainstream movies. Liao said the department would meet with filmmakers to hash out ways of making Taipei a friendly environment for filmmaking, thereby attracting more local and foreign filmmakers to shoot their movies in the city. The eighth Taipei Film Festival, which ended on July 9, attracted 82,032 movie-goers for box office earnings of NT$9.8 million (US$290,000).
