Dengue fever warning issued for south

Dengue fever may pose an increasing threat to the south of the country, the Center for Disease Control said yesterday.

After Tropical Storm Bilis struck, the density of mosquitoes transmitting the illness rose substantially, the center said at a press conference.

Center Deputy Director Lin Ting (林頂) said there have been 59 cases of dengue fever this year, of which 17 were contracted within the country. Fifteen of these 17 cases were reported in Cianjhen (前鎮) and Cianjin (前金) districts in Kaohsiung City this summer.

The neighborhoods where the Kaohsiung cases were reported are close to one another, Lin said.

The other 42 cases were contracted abroad, with most cases coming from Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, the center said.

Senior citizens in northern Taiwan should also beware of mosquito bites because the elderly are more vulnerable to Japanese encephalitis, the center said.
