The Cabinet-level National Science Council (NSC) approved the allocation of NT$86 billion (US$2.6 billion) for science and technology development projects next year, a council spokesman said over the weekend. The budget allocation represents a 10.8 percent growth over this year's level of NT$77.6 billion, the spokesman said. A total of NT$76.712 billion has been budgeted for next year's spending on science projects submitted by 22 agencies under the Executive Yuan, while NT$9.288 billion will go to Academia Sinica for its science and technology research expenditure. Of the NT$86 billion budget for science projects, NT$11.565 billion will be spent on national-scale science plans, while the rest will be channeled into 44 priority programs and other general projects. The priority projects to be promoted next year will cover a wide range of sectors, including energy technology such as biodiesel, medical care technology and biomedical science, as well as agricultural safety and hi-tech talent training.
