The Central Weather Bureau is likely to issue a sea alert for Typhoon Kaemi today if its course remains unchanged. As of 2pm yesterday, the bureau reported that the fifth typhoon of the year was located approximately 1,050km southeast of Oluanpi (鵝鸞鼻) in Pingtung County. It was moving northwest at 17kph. The bureau said that unlike Tropical Storm Bilis, which swept through Taiwan over a week ago, Kaemi has a rather solid structure. The intensity of the storm is also increasing, the bureau said, adding that it has already advised sea vessels operating near waters east of the Philippines and in the Bashi Channel to be on the alert for the approaching storm. Showers are expected beginning today in the mountainous areas in the central and southern regions of Taiwan. In the evening, showers are likely to spread through the east coast.
