Foreign workers to be issued new forgery-proof IDs

    CNA, TAIPEI
    Friday, Jul 21, 2006, Page 2

The Council of Labor Affairs (CLA) will replace the alien resident certificates of all foreign workers in Taiwan with forgery-proof integrated circuit (IC) cards, a council official said yesterday.

The new measure is aimed at preventing foreign workers from committing crimes while in the country and ensuring national security, the official said, adding that the replacement process for 30,000 white-collar foreign workers and 330,000 blue-collar foreign laborers should be completed by year's end.

The funds required for the project -- around NT$500 million (US$15.27 million) -- would come from the CLA's Employment Stabilization Fund, so foreign workers will not have to pay any extra expenses, the official said.

With the anti-forgery microchips, the IC cards will be protected from counterfeiting, the official said, adding that if domestic employers have any doubts about the authenticity of the cards, they can contact the police.
