Taiwan Quick Take: More children online: study

STAFF WRITER WITH CNA

Most third and fourth graders spend 10 hours every week surfing the Internet, and about 30 percent of them stay online to play games, according to a study released over the weekend. The I-Link Community Service Association surveyed about 2,500 students in the third and fourth grade among 45 elementary schools across the nation this year. According to Huang Wei-wei (黃葳葳), a professor at the Department of Radio and Television at National Chengchi University, an increasing number of children have access to the Internet at an early age. About 15 percent of the interviewees started using the Internet when they were in kindergarten, but close to 75 percent of them were unaware that Web sites are labeled restricted or non-restricted. Huang said that the Internet has become a constant presence in childrens' lives, adding that parents should help their children to avoid becoming Internet addicts.
