Taiwan Quick Take: Chen Che-nan refused bail

STAFF WRITER WITH CNA

The Taiwan High Court yesterday rejected a request filed by former Presidential Office deputy secretary-general Chen Che-nan (陳哲男) for bail, marking the second time the ex-presidential senior aide had been denied bail since early April. Chen has been detained since April 7 on charges of taking bribes from a businessman and profiting from insider-trading. He was indicted on those charges on July 7 and the Taipei District Court decided on July 8 that Chen should be detained for another three months while investigations into his alleged wrongdoing continued. A chief prosecutor at the Taipei Prosecutor's Office said earlier this month that he was seeking a 12-year jail term for Chen for crimes committed between 2000 and 2003, when he was employed at the Presidential Office.
