Taiwan Quick Take: CWB likely to issue warning

The Central Weather Bureau said yesterday that it would issue a sea warning at 2:30am today for Typhoon Bilis for ships off the coast of Taitung County and in the Bashi Channel should Bilis' course remain unchanged. The bureau said the typhoon was expected to start affecting the country tomorrow. They forecast that Bilis would affect the entire nation by Friday. "The typhoon has increased in intensity and is carrying with it a huge amount of rain," bureau spokesman Wu De-rong (吳德榮) said. "The public has to be on high alert when faced with a storm of this magnitude." According to the bureau's report, as of 10pm last night, the typhoon was moving northwest and was 850km southeast of Oluanpi (鵝巒鼻) in Pingtung County. It was moving at a speed of 17kph, and its radius had expanded to 300km. The Ministry of Education will announce by Friday whether the standardized test for junior high school students will proceed as scheduled.
