Taiwan Quick Take: Stun guns not allowed

A Mainland Affairs Council official yesterday warned Taiwanese tourists not to take electrical self-defense devices with them when traveling through airports in Hong Kong or Macau. Tsai Chih-chung (蔡之中), director of Hong Kong and Macau Affairs for the council said that although electrical self-defense devices such as stun guns were permitted at airports in China and Taiwan, such equipment was banned in Hong Kong and Macau. Over the last six months several incidents had occurred when Taiwanese tourists were pulled up by Hong Kong and Macau airport security officers for placing self-defense equipment in their checked luggage, Tsai said. He urged people not to take such equipment with them when traveling in the two territories to avoid punishment or a delay in their itineraries.
