Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) yesterday denied a report which said Acting Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) Chairman Lu Daung-yen (呂東英) quit last Friday because the two had disagreed about the appointment of financial and economic officials.
"He [Lu] never offered his resignation to me either verbally or in writing. I had a conversation on business-related issues with him and it went well," Su said when confronted by reporters at an event held by the Democratic Progressive Party.
Su's remarks stemmed from a report by the Chinese-language United Daily yesterday, which said that Lu resigned after Su refused to retain Sam Wang (王得山) as Taiwan Futures Exchange (TFE) chairman and instead appointed former vice premier Wu Rong-i (吳榮義) as Wang's successor.
According to the report, while Lu told the press last Wednesday that Wang would remain in office, Su had not agreed to this, and the Cabinet announced late last Friday that Wu would replace Wang, who would retire from politics.
During their conversation on Wednesday, Su and Lu exchanged views about personnel arrangements for the heads of TFE, the Taiwan Stock Exchange Corp, GRETAI Securities Market, and the Taiwan Depository & Clearing Corporation, the report said.
But Su yesterday said there was no dissension between him and Lu regarding personnel, and that Lu hadn't insist on retaining Wang.
"He [Lu] has great initiative, chooses what is good and holds fast to it, and works very hard. I really appreciate it," he said.
"I am the premier and [Lu] is acting FSC chairman. I know when I should govern and when I should delegate authority. And this is the principle in making personnel arrangements," Su said.
