Eight new green manure plants, having proven effective against pest infestation, will replace oil-seed rape, which is susceptible to damage caused by insects and diseases, said the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station. An official at the station said yesterday that local farmers usually grow oil-seed rapes in the interim between the second and the third rice planting period -- which occurs around the Lunar New Year -- to revitalize and fertilize rice paddies. However, as oil-seed rape's enriching quality is often reduced because of its susceptibility to vermin infestation, the station began looking for better substitutes a few years back, he said. The eight new plants are: cosmos, plains coreopsis, cockscomb, zinnia, dhrysanthemum indicum, pigweed and feather cockscomb.
