The Ministry of Justice yesterday published the results of efforts to crack down on administrative or political corruption since July 2000.

It prosecuted 3,241 cases and recovered NT$28 billion (US$865 million) in embezzled funds.

A ministry spokesman said that 7,959 civil servants and elected officials were indicted for taking bribes.

    Of those prosecuted, 426 were high-ranking officials, 1,466 were middle-ranking and 2,466 were low-ranking.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications had the highest rate of officials indicted -- 3.33 percent of the total number of indictments.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs had the second-highest rate with 3 percent.

Officials with the Kaohsiung City Government accounted for 6.7 percent of all government officials prosecuted for corruption, followed by 4.1 percent from the Taipei County Government and 3.48 percent from the Taipei City Government.
