Big thighs are not only an eyesore for beauty-lovers, they can also increase one's risk of cardiovascular disease, a study has found.
Kang Ning General Hospital in Taipei said that an indication of obesity and potential heart risk was if twice the circumference of one's thigh was 5cm greater than one's hip measurement.
The hospital quoted foreign studies as saying that thighs that are over 52cm in circumference be considered "too thick," and that a check of fat check would be required.
Yin Chang-sheng (尹長生), the hospital's vice president, suggested that women with big thighs should walk or jog 15 to 20 minutes a day. Another good way to reduce fat in the upper leg is to do leg raises or leg extension exercises.
He noted that for losing weight around the thighs or hips, exercise is more effective than going on a diet.
According to a survey done by the hospital on 403 women aged 25 to 45 in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, Taiwanese women feel most frustrated about their hips, thighs and lower abdomen, in that order.
As many as 80 percent of the surveyed women said they've tried all they could but still have not been able to get their lower body in good shape.
The survey found that more than 50 percent of Taiwan women have spent an average of six years trying to improve the beauty of the lower half of their body by dieting, applying "thinning oils or creams," taking medicine, wearing girdles or wrapping their hips and thighs in cellophane.
While most women in Taiwan would like have a body with great breast, waist and hip measurements, 67 percent of them do not exercise regularly, trying instead to maintain their figure by controlling their food intake, Yin said.
Often, they sit down after eating, and that sedative lifestyle eventually leads to accumulation of fat in the lower body, leading to a "pear shaped" body, he noted.
He advised women to look beyond breast, waist and hip measurements and instead pay more attention to a balanced body shape, and in particular to thigh measurements, since oversized thighs can affect the health of their hearts.
