Taiwan Quick Take: Caregiver rule amended

    Tuesday, Jul 04, 2006, Page 3

Families with members who are severely ill or in a vegetative state will be allowed to hire two foreign caregivers to take turns caring for the invalid, a Council of Labor Affairs source said yesterday. Families with members whose Barthel Index -- or Ability in Daily Life -- reads zero can apply for two caregivers at one time, from October at the earliest, a council official said. This is in line with the passage yesterday of an amendment to the council's regulations governing the introduction and employment of foreign domestic helpers in the country. The old regulation provided for only a single foreign caregiver for a severely ill patient. However, this has not proved workable since records show that there are more than 2,600 cases of two foreign caregivers being hired for a single patient over the past three years, the official said.
