Examination Yuan president requests budget's passage

    By Fan Cheng-hsiang

Examination Yuan President Yao Chia-wen (姚嘉文) sent an urgent message to Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) on Friday, saying that the freezing of its budget in the legislature has affected the performance of its duties.

"The Examination Yuan and the Ministry of Civil Service are both government offices under the protection of the Constitution. There is a fear that we might be doing something against the Constitution because we do not have money to maintain the basic operations of these two government bodies," Yao said in his message to Wang.

Two-thirds of the Examination Yuan's budget as well as the Ministry of Civil Service's full budget, have been boycotted by the pan-blue lawmakers as revenge for the pan-green's approval of the regulation reducing pensions for teachers and police officers.

"We have been doing everything we can to save as much money as possible. Unfortunately, I do not know how much longer we can hold out," Yao said in his message to Wang.

The Examination Yuan and the Ministry of Civil Service are in charge of organizing national exams, including professional certificates and licenses for some 100,000 applicants yearly. They are also charged with selecting and evaluating government officials through national exams and related mechanisms.
