Former Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Business Management Committee Chairman Liu Tai-ying (劉泰英) was found guilty yesterday of misappropriation of funds and several other charges and sentenced to a combined eight years in jail in the much reported Zanadu Development Corp case.
The Taipei District Court acquitted Liu of charges that he took commissions from Zanadu, Taiwan Fertilizer, Taiwan Pineapple and other companies.
The scandal erupted in September 2002 when Su Hui-chen (蘇惠珍), Zanadu's vice president and principle shareholder, accused Liu of taking more than NT$1 billion (US$30 million) from her in exchange for helping secure a syndicated bank loan for her company.
A host of irregularities and illegal practices are suspected in the case, involving quite a number of business and political heavyweights. Former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) and vice president Lien Chan (連戰) have appeared in court to provide testimony.
In June last year, former Taiwan Fertilizer Chairman Hsieh Sheng-fu (謝生富) was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in jail, Su to eight years behind bars, and Yu Chen Yueh-ying (余陳月英) -- a former Kaohsiung County commissioner and Democratic Progressive Party politician -- to one year and six months.
Yesterday, Liu was found guilty of six counts of violating the tax code, business accounting law and corporate law. He was given sentences ranging from three months to two years and 10 months for a combined eight-year sentence.
