Taiwan Quick Take: Parents under stress: poll

    Friday, Jun 30, 2006, Page 3

The Taiwan Fund for Children and Families released results of a survey yesterday indicating that 46 percent of elementary school pupils' parents experience "greater than normal" pressure due to the multiple pressures of being a parent, wage earner, spouse and a member of society, with 5 percent saying they suffer "extreme" pressure. For the fifth straight year a "lack of knowledge about parental responsibilities" has been the No. 1 reason cited for child abuse, according to the survey's authors. The group suggested parents learn stress management and relaxation techniques, find more time to unwind, make good use of social support networks and share the housework. The group will distribute 150,000 booklets nationwide to help teach parents how to improve relations with their children.
