Taiwan Quick Take: Nicaragua ties under threat

    Friday, Jun 30, 2006, Page 3

Taiwan on Wednesday threatened to suspend all ties with Nicaragua if it reestablishes diplomatic relations with China -- an election promise made by the opposition Sandinista Front. Sandinista leaders have promised reduce contacts with Taiwan to a commercial level should they win the Nov. 5 presidential election. "If they break diplomatic ties, we will have no office" in Nicaragua, said Taiwan's chief negotiator in Managua, Ismael Ming Wen Wong. "Let's hope that this does not succeed," he said. Former president and Sandinesta leader Daniel Ortega said last month Nicaragua should reconsider its relationship with "the most attractive market in the world."
