Taiwan Quick Take: Vatican, China talks rumored
Thursday, Jun 29, 2006, Page 3
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is checking a report that the Vatican is engaging in secret talks with China on the establishment of diplomatic relations, an official said yesterday. Ministry spokesman Michel Lu (呂慶龍) said it was a well-known fact that Beijing and the Holy See have been maintaining interaction for years. Lu was responding to a report published on Tuesday by the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post that a high-level Vatican delegation was currently on a visit in Beijing and was likely to discuss issues concerning the establishment of diplomatic relations. China has issued several conditions on the establishment of diplomatic ties with the Vatican, including that it must not interfere with China's internal affairs and must sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
