Taiwan Quick Take: Councilor freed on bail
Wednesday, Jun 28, 2006, Page 3
The Taipei District Court allowed a Democratic Progressive Party Taipei City councilor implicated in several extortion cases to be released on NT$800,000 (US$24,500) bail yesterday, but barred him from leaving the country. Prosecutors interrogated Lo Tsung-sheng (羅宗勝) and two of his aides for 13 hours on Monday after searching their residences and offices in response to complaints they had extorted money from a number of construction firms between 2002 and 2004. Prosecutors filed a request in court for Lo's detention on the grounds that the crime is a felony and he should be prevented from colluding with witnesses. However, the court ruled that the witnesses were not likely to collude with Lo.
