    Kaohsiung upbeat on German interest

Kaohsiung County Commissioner Yang Chiu-hsing (·¨¬î¿³) yesterday expressed his optimism that German makers of medical equipment could be persuaded to invest in his county.

Yang, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party, is heading a county government delegation on a European visit to persuade some of the world's leading producers of devices and equipment for medical treatment to set up manufacturing operations in the Kaohsiung Science Park.

The delegation arrived in Geneva on Friday after concluding a visit to Germany.

In an interview with CNA in Geneva, Yang said that the industry needs a workforce with expertise in making high-grade metal and steel products and that Taiwan is a better place than China to build factories for manufacturing medical equipment and tools.

Yang said that German businesses seem more confident in Taiwan's ability to protect intellectual property rights than China's.
