Taiwan Quick Take: Bullet train test stumbles

Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp's test run of the country's high speed railway yesterday nearly turned into an embarrassment as the operating system broke down when it passed through the station in Miaoli County. The bullet train was forced to stop inside one of the tunnels on the section near Houlung Creek («áÀs·Ë). The company had to temporarily call off the test run and tow the cars back to the station in Taichung for further inspection. The test run was resumed at 11:20pm. The company has been holding multiple test runs in different sections at different speeds since last year in preparation for the formal launch of the nation's first bullet train in October. The test run from Yunlin to Taipei yesterday drew the attention of many tourists who were eager to see the 700T-model bullet train operating at high speed. The company has set up six viewing spots -- two in Miaoli County and one each in Changhua County, Taichung, Hsinchu County and Taoyuan County.
