Medical professional Huang Fang-yen (黃芳彥), a close friend of the first family who has been subpoenaed by prosecutors as a witness in an alleged gift voucher scandal case involving the first lady, returned to Taipei yesterday from the US.
The Taipei District Prosecutors' Office subpoenaed Huang earlier this week for questioning as a witness next Friday.

Huang, a deputy superintendent of the Shin Kong Hospital in Taipei, is alleged to have passed a huge amount of Sogo Depart-ment Store gift vouchers given by a businessman to President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) wife, Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍).
Huang was swamped by reporters and cameras upon arrival at CKS International Airport as his whereabouts had been unknown since he left a friend's residence near Washington several days ago. He had asked for leave of absence from his job until next month, leaving the country for the US for health reasons early this month.
Huang was whisked to his office at Shin Kong Hospital, where he appeared briefly for a news conference. He said he would meet judicial authorities soon to give a full account of what he knew about the case.
Huang also said that he would not hesitate to apologize to the public if he were to be implicated in any wrongdoing.
Tseng Yi-sheng (曾益盛), the prosecutor in charge of the case, had reportedly spoken to Huang on the phone after he returned.
Huang is said to have expressed willingness to come in earlier for questioning. Given that, the prosecution is considering advancing the date to question him.
