The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) yesterday announced that the government would strengthen the enforcement of rules requiring Chinese professionals visiting Taiwan to travel in groups starting next month. Starting on July 1, the Immigration Office of the National Police Agency would strictly enforce these rules, the MAC said in a press statement, adding that Chinese professionals traveling in a group must arrive at the same time or risk being denied entry. The measure was made partly in response to the death of Zhu Xiangdong (朱向東), deputy commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics of China. Zhu died in Taiwan last September during a hot spring excursion to Beitou. Zhu came to Taiwan last year with the wrong invitation and thus did not travel with the group that he was supposed to come with.
