The Council of Agriculture yesterday urged operators of hog and fowl farms to set up nets with government subsidies before the end of the year to prevent the outbreak of avian flu. Officials from the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine said that starting from Jan.1 next year, any hog and fowl farms that have not set up nets would be fined between NT$10,000 and NT$50,000 (US$306-US$1,530). If the hogs or fowl on those farms had to be culled due to avian flu infection, the government would not compensate the farmers for their losses, the officials added. While Taiwan is not an avian flu-affected country, it is on the migratory route of many birds, they said. This, coupled with its geographic proximity to China, where the problem of bird flu is serious, means that Taiwan cannot let down its guard, the officials said.
