Taiwan Quick Take: Ma unhappy with ranking

Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) said yesterday that he was unhappy with a Reader's Digest ranking of courteous cities, in which Taipei placed 28th out of the 35 cities listed. Since Taipei is generally considered a "friendly city," Ma said people sometimes have different opinions on "friendly" or "courteous" due to the culture gap. Ma said a writer in Shanghai told him he thought Taipei is a very friendly city because he was once given directions by a passer-by. Taipei Information Department Director Lo Chih-cheng (羅智成) said Asians sometimes pretend that they do not see other people in trouble on the street "mainly to prevent the awkwardness of the victims." Friendliness and courteousness are sometimes classified as different things, Lo said. He said he will ask his friends and international civic groups to tell the magazine that Taipei is a friendly city.
