Taiwan Quick Take: Student wins compensation
Wednesday, Jun 21, 2006, Page 3
A court yesterday ordered a junior high school in Miaoli to pay a student NT$660,181 (US$20,253) in compensation for administering corporal punishment that put the student in the hospital for 16 days. Encouraged by the judgement, the Humanistic Education Foundation, a civic group that advocates development of "human-centered education," said it was the first time in the nation's judicial history that compensation had been awarded to a student who was a victim of corporal punishment. According to the foundation, it took the student's family about 19 months to win the case. The foundation added, however, that no compensation was enough to heal the psychological wounds that the student had suffered in addition to the physical injuries inflicted upon him.
