Taiwan Quick Take: Yeh wants free lunch for kids

    Wednesday, Jun 21, 2006, Page 3

Acting Kaohsiung Mayor Yeh Chu-lan (¸µâÄõ) yesterday asked the city's education and finance officials to find money for a "free lunch for all grade school children" program that will be implemented next year as part of her plan to create a "welfare state." During a budget meeting on Monday, the city government approved a budget for a program to provide free lunch to school children of low- and middle-income families. Yeh said the program should be extended to cover all school children to show the government's concern for them. "Many countries have offered free education to their younger generation," she said. City officials estimate that NT$600 million (US$18.4 million) would be required annually to provide the lunches. Yeh said it would be money well spent as free meals would make kids happy and help make the country stronger.
