Wednesday, Jun 21, 2006, Page 3
The density of mosquitoes carrying dengue fever has soared in several cities and counties in the past three weeks, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday. The cities and counties include Chiayi County, Tainan City and County, Kaohsiung City and County, Pingtung County, Penghu County and Taitung County, the CDC said. The agency said the concentration rose after recent flooding caused by torrential rains. The center said it had asked local governments in the affected areas to strengthen efforts to clean up areas where the the two fever transmitters -- Aedes aegypt L. and Aedes albopictus Skuse -- breed. The number of reported dengue fever cases increased by 17 last week, with the number of cases so far this year at 29, with two being cases of domestic infection and the remainder coming from abroad, the center said.
