    Taiwan Quick Take: Protect `taishang,' SEF says

    The two sides of the Taiwan Strait should put aside their political disputes and negotiate measures to protect the rights and personal safety of Taiwanese businesspeople operating in China, often called taishang (¥x°Ó) the quasi-official Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) said. A SEF official said that although taishang have tried to keep a low profile and behave prudently in China, many of them have often fallen victim to criminal activities and accidents. As China's economy is transforming rapidly, the gap between the rich and the poor is also widening quickly, the official said, adding that Taiwanese businesspeople, with their economic success, have become a target of criminal rings there.
