Saturday, Jun 17, 2006, Page 3
Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) will visit Japan from July 10 to July 15, Japanese news media reported yesterday. The reports said that Ma would visit Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka and Kyoto, marking his first visit to Japan since assuming the KMT chairmanship last August. Kyoto News said that Ma is scheduled to arrive in Tokyo on July 10, where he is expected to meet with Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara and political and financial figures from across the political spectrum. He will also deliver speeches at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan and Yokohama City University. Reports said that Ma is scheduled to travel to Kyoto on July 13, where he will meet with the governors of Kyoto and Osaka and deliver a speech at Doshisha University before winding up his trip on July 15. A report in the Sankei Shimbun said that in the wake of his visit to Europe and the US early this year, Ma is hoping that this trip will help him score points in diplomatic affairs and shed his anti-Japanese image.
