Taiwan Quick Take: Analyst expresses concern
Friday, Jun 16, 2006, Page 3
Stephen Yates, a senior policy analyst with the Asian Studies Center at the Heritage Foundation, yesterday met with Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) and expressed his concern over the opposition's campaign to recall President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁). Wang said Yates asked him about the unrest the recall motion has caused, but declined to reveal more about their conversation. In related news, Wang said that Clifford Hart, the US State Department's chief Taiwan staffer, yesterday phoned Jason Yuan (袁健生), the pan-blue camp's representative in Washington, to clear up an allegation that the long-stalled arms procurement from the US has influenced its willingness to receive Taiwanese officials. Hart told Yuan that Taiwanese officials are more than welcome in the US. The allegation was made by a pan-blue politician who said on Tuesday that Wang was forced to cancel a trip to the US at the end of last month due to the continuing deadlock over the arms bill.
