Pro-independence groups to hold rally on Saturday

The Taiwan Society, a new pro-independence group comprising over 100 public societies, yesterday urged the public to join the rally scheduled to be held on Saturday on Ketagelan Boulevard to voice their hope for political stability and economic recovery.

The leader of the Taiwan Society, Wu Shuh-min (吳樹民), who is also the chairman of the Northern Taiwan Society, held a press conference yesterday afternoon to announce the event and call on people who are concerned about the country's future to come and join the rally.

Wu said that the purpose of the rally was to voice objection to the recent political disturbances caused by the pan-blue camp, which he said was using justice as a ploy to grab power.

Working under the theme of "striving for political stability, a thriving economy and safeguarding Taiwan," the rally will consist of two parts.

The first part will be an open forum for participants to voice out their opinions on the current political situation, and the second part will include poetry readings and a chorus.

"We will hold a rally that is very different from the shitty and disturbing rally held by the pan-blue camp," Northern Taiwan Society secretary-general Chet Yang (楊文嘉) said yesterday.

Wu said that the corruption scandals are currently part of the legal process and should be judged by the judiciary, not by politicians.

"We are not satisfied with the performance of the Democratic Progressive Party government, but we know that these abuses are a legacy of the evil practices initiated by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT)," Wu said.

Today's chaos is a residue of the poison left by the KMT," Wu added.

Wu said that he expected Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) and Minister of Justice Morley Shih (施茂林) to apply the same standard in all their criminal investigations -- whether the accused is from the pan-green or the pan-blue camp.

The Taiwan Society will be formally founded on Sunday. Former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) is expected to attend the event. However, Lee will not go to the rally on Saturday.
