Taiwan Quick Take: I'm not ready to be prez: Lu

    Monday, Jun 12, 2006, Page 3

The Presidential Office yesterday issued a statement dismissing a media report claiming that Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) is ready to take over the presidency. "The report is fabricated and has caused grave distress for the vice president," the statement said. The statement was made in response to a report published in the Chinese-language newspaper the China Times yesterday. The report quoted an anonymous source, who claimed to be Lu's "friend," as saying that they had a chance to talk for seven hours one day after Lu and President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) won their re-election in 2004. Lu nodded when the "friend" asked her whether she was ready to take over the nation's helm. The statement said that Lu has many friends but that the supposed "friend" quoted in the report had nothing to do with her. The statement also said that Lu has openly reiterated that the recall campaign will not succeed and therefore there is no issue about whether she will take over the presidency.
