Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Chiu Yi (邱毅), who previously claimed he doubted the credibility of the judicial system, yesterday filed a lawsuit against President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), the first lady and one of Chen's close aides for alleged corruption.
In February, Chiu was found guilty of being involved in a riot by Kaohsiung District Court. Chiu climbed onto a truck that rammed into a courthouse gate during widespread protests against Chen's narrow election victory in 2004. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Chiu said while appearing at the Kaohsiung Branch of the Taiwan High Court for a second trial involving the case that he suspected the initial ruling had been influenced by politics.
"The prosecutors and judges of the Kaohsiung district court all got promotions after the first case. I suspect that their purpose was to hinder me from exposing more government scandals," Chiu said.
Despite questioning the judicial system, Chiu yesterday filed a suit against Chen, first lady Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍) and former Presidential Office deputy secretary-general Ma Yung-cheng (馬永成), who resigned last week, for alleged corruption.
"I have specific evidence proving their wrongdoing and I will show it in court," Chiu said after filing the suit at the Taipei District Prosecutors' Office.
