A policeman has been indicted for tipping off a criminal gang about an upcoming police raid by sending a coded message, the Central News Agency said yesterday.

Huang Ming-hui (黃銘輝), an investigator from the Taipei Police Bureau's Criminal Investigation Division, tipped off the Tian Dao Meng, or Heavenly Way Gang, on June 5, 2002, about an upcoming police raid, the agency said.

Huang his cellphone to call a Tian Dao Meng member, saying "It's going to rain after dark, so you had better stay at home for two or three days."

Thanks Huang's tip-off, the Tian Dao Meng members went into hiding and the police failed to catch them.

Police Huang's phone call and suspected he had warned Tian Dao Meng about the raid.

Huang the allegations, arguing that he had a dinner appointment with a friend and had to cancel it because of bad weather.

But a check of the meteorological data showed that the weather was fine on June 5 and on the following days.

Huang indicted on Saturday on charges of leaking information to criminals and could face a maximum three-year jail term, the agency reported.
