    Wednesday, May 17, 2006, Page 3

The Central Weather Bureau yesterday afternoon issued a sea warning for Taiwan as Typhoon Chanchu approaches. The storm, with a radius of 300km, was centered 760km south-southwest of Kinmen as of 5:30pm yesterday, and was moving in a north-northwest direction at a speed of 18kph, a spokesman said. Sea vessels operating in the Taiwan Strait, the Bashi Channel or near Dongsha Island were warned about the approaching typhoon. According to the bureau's forecast, the typhoon is approaching China's Guangdong and Fujian provinces and is expected to make landfall in China tomorrow. If the typhoon does not alter its path, the bureau would issue a land warning for Kinmen and Matsu early tomorrow morning, it said. Heavy rains are expected in mountainous areas in the north, east and south of Taiwan. Taitung, Hualien and Pingtung counties can expect torrential rain.
