Former special assistant to the US president on national security affairs Michael Green was set to arrive for a five-day visit yesterday evening to meet with several political heavyweights. Green, who doubled as the US National Security Council's senior director for Asian affairs, is scheduled to meet with President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), Minister of Foreign Affairs James Huang (黃志芳), Mainland Affairs Council Chairman Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) and Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) during his stay. He was also invited by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy to deliver a speech on Thursday, the day of his departure. Local media reported that Green had visited at the end of March 2004 to meet with Chen in order to discuss the ongoing issue of US military sales to Taiwan and other topics of common interest.

From April 7 to Saturday last week, 139,848 people sought medical help for diarrhea-related illness, a 15.7 percent increase from last week’s 120,868 reports, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Center Deputy Director Lee Chia-lin (李佳琳) said. The number of people who reported diarrhea-related illness last week was the fourth highest in the same time period over the past decade, Lee said. Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
