A Thai worker who had been at large for nearly 10 years died in police custody yesterday, an official of the Hualien County Police Bureau said. The 45-year-old worker, identified as Ha-chi, who had been caught during a routine road block on Monday, was to be moved to the Sanshia Detention Center for Foreigners to await deportation. According to the police, Ha became so distressed after two days in custody that he created an uproar by hitting his head against the iron bars, killing himself. The policeman said Ha died after being hospitalized and that an autopsy was being conducted to ascertain the cause of death.
