President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) picked his new identification (ID) card yesterday at the Minsheng community borough chief's office in Taipei, his legal residence. The president was all smiles while posing for an army of photo journalists with his new card, even jubilantly kissing it before the camera. First lady Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍) was not present. When asked how the wheelchair-bound first lady would receive her new ID, Hsieh Ai-ling (謝愛齡), director of the Population Administration Department under the Ministry of the Interior, said Wu could apply for home delivery. Comatose, seriously ill and physically challenged people may be eligible for home delivery service, but registration officials must see applicants before handing over the new ID cards, the minister added.
