An opposition legislator who accused first lady Wu Shu-jen (
Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Lee Chuan-chiao (李全教) was accused of ruining the reputation of the daughter of Yang The-tsen (楊德岑), who committed suicide in January.
Yang revealed his daughter's last words, in which she said that her life and reputation had been ruined by Lee, at a press conference yesterday.
"It was Lee who killed my daughter. It's a shame that we have a legislator like him. What kind of thing could he possibly do for the country?" Yang said.
Lee responded by saying he had not known Yang's daughter.
Yang's daughter was found dead after she jumped off a building on Jan. 16. She had filed a lawsuit against Lee in November 2004 accusing him of making threats and of sexual assault.
Lee was found not guilty in a decision by the Taipei District Prosecutors' Office in August last year. The ruling said the complainant had failed to provide sufficient evidence.
Yang said that he suspected the prosecutors had come under pressure from Lee. He said he regretted not being able to help his daughter bring Lee to justice and had been trying to ask for help from legislators and visited the legislature several times.
On Tuesday, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Huang Chao-hui (
Yang said his daughter had become extremely thin last January, and when he questioned her about it, she told him it was because of Lee.
Yang said that Lee had promised his daughter he might marry her, but then abandoned her, sending her into a severe depression.
"My daughter told me that Lee sexually assaulted her in a pub called U2 MTV in April 2004. After we filed the lawsuit, we were threatened [and told] to drop the case, and a person [Lee's aide] left NT$700,000 [US$21,558]," Yang said.
Yang added: "We told him at that time to take the money back. We didn't need the money, what we wanted was my daughter's reputation."
Lee said he had been proven innocent by the ruling.
"I suspect that Yang has brought this up again to divert attention away from the disclosure about the Sogo voucher scandal related to the first family," Lee said.
Huang said Lee was lying when he said he hadn't known Yang's daughter.
"Yang's daughter received a text message that was sent by Lee. Lee told her in the message that, `I can't sleep. Miss you. Call me,'" Huang said.
The Taipei Department of Health yesterday said it has launched a probe into a restaurant at Far Eastern Sogo Xinyi A13 Department Store after a customer died of suspected food poisoning. A preliminary investigation on Sunday found missing employee health status reports and unsanitary kitchen utensils at Polam Kopitiam (寶林茶室) in the department store’s basement food court, the department said. No direct relationship between the food poisoning death and the restaurant was established, as no food from the day of the incident was available for testing and no other customers had reported health complaints, it said, adding that the investigation is ongoing. POOR PREPARATION: Cultures can form on food that is out of refrigeration for too long and cooking does not reliably neutralize their toxins, an epidemiologist said Medical professionals yesterday said that suspected food poisoning deaths revolving around a restaurant at Far Eastern Department Store Xinyi A13 Store in Taipei could have been caused by one of several types of bacterium. Ho Mei-shang (何美鄉), an epidemiologist at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Biomedical Sciences, wrote on Facebook that the death of a 39-year-old customer of the restaurant suggests the toxin involved was either “highly potent or present in massive large quantities.” People who ate at the restaurant showed symptoms within hours of consuming the food, suggesting that the poisoning resulted from contamination by a toxin and not infection of the
